The Clayton Brothers x Daniel Johnston x Fuel TV

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

In this signature series promo for action sports network Fuel TV, the art of Rob and Christian Clayton a.k.a. the Clayton Brothers gets animated and paired with music from my favorite mentally unstable lovelorn artist, Daniel Johnston. Truly a match made in heaven. Or hell. Or wherever this place is:

James Jarvis Goes Onwards

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Simple. Cinematic. Singapore. From Brit illustrator, vinyl designer, and now director on the run, James Jarvis on his collabo with Nike:

“The film was inspired by certain personal experiences in running – a favourite run over Blanchland moor in Northumberland, being attacked by a crow in Singapore – and also by the transcendent, almost psychedelic experience of the simple act of running. Rather than a marketing project inititated by Nike, the film was something proposed and produced by myself, and as such I hope represents a much more equal collaboration with a brand.”

Read more from Jarvis’ blog here and visit the site for the film here.

A Jarvis sample and how I’m feeling right about now…

Do You Know Your Enemy?

Friday, April 24th, 2009

I know mine. And while editing Green Day’s latest music video for “Know Your Enemy”, like on most projects, it was sleep and time. Fortunately I was working alongside Motion Theory’s man with the master plan, director Mathew Cullen, who shares my ultra obsessiveness when it comes to creating good product. Spending many a late night at Motion Theory’s Venice digs, we were supported by a talented team of at least a dozen other artists, animators, and producers, who all had a hand in putting this thing together. With hidden messages, subversive imagery, and a killer performance by the band, this one ranks as one of my favorite music video edits I’ve cut. I’m pumped and proud of this piece, especially since it’s only the second music video I’ve edited since focusing more on films and art projects over the past year. Congratulations to all the Motion Theorists who put in the time and hard work to make such a cool piece!

Global television premiere today, April 24th at 8pm ET/5pm PT on all channels that still play music videos. Check it out on a big screen!

Also, check out the behind the scenes video for some candid moments with the band on location in downtown Los Angeles here on MTV.com.

Motion Theory Goes Boom Boom Pow

Friday, April 24th, 2009

For the past few weeks I’ve been in lockdown mode at Motion Theory in Venice cutting some creative projects, including the new Green Day music video. But I haven’t been the only one. I’ve been surrounded by artists and animators camped out in front of their computers working non-stop to get out the latest Black Eyed Peas music video for “Boom Boom Pow” which had it’s premiere last week to millions of viewers worldwide. Needless to say, top talented directors and hard working maniacs Mark Kudsi and Mathew Cullen brought their own brand of “Boom Boom Pow” in this electrifying clip:

Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow”

Directed by Mark Kudsi & Mathew Cullen
Produced by Patrick Nugent

In addition to all the work they’ve put into the music video, Motion Theory is also designing the album’s cover and interior artwork (is there anything these guys can’t do?) According to BlackEyedPeas.com, the Peas’ fifth studio album titled The E.N.D. comes out in 45 days, 10 hours, 45 minutes, and 13 seconds from now. 12, 11, 10…

And one more thing…if you’ve been seeing these posters pasted around your city/town/area then this viral vid should help explain, and vice versa. Also created by the Motion Theory crew:

Happy April 20th!

Monday, April 20th, 2009

And as you enjoy whatever it is you’ll be enjoying this fine 4/20, just make sure you don’t call the cops on yourself if you “think you’re dying” or if “time is going by really, really, really, really, slow”, cause chances are you’re just really, really, really, really, high. Like this classic ex-cop:

Two Trailer Day Thursday: Fernando Villena Edition

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Fernando Villena is one of my best friends as well as one of the most talented film editors I know (Rize, Battle in Seattle, music videos for Tupac, Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, and many more). Ever since I started my editing career at Brass Knuckles in Venice back in 2000, I’ve always looked up to Fern as one of the senior editors there. We quickly formed a bond through work and friendship over the years and I’ve seen Fern in different stages along the way; becoming the consummate professional who seems to always make the right calls, as my editing mentor as well as supervising editor of Beautiful Losers, and most importantly as one of my best friends who I explicitly trust. Being both little brown editors in a white man’s post production world and sharing our love of sports, which brings out some of our best shit talking (he’s not that good), has only strengthened our kinship and I am eternally grateful for all that he’s done for me over the years. So thank you Fern, thanks for taking me under your wing all those years ago and helping me realize my potential as an editor when I didn’t know I had it in me. This weekend Fern has not one, but two films he’s edited this past year coming to theaters this week and they couldn’t be any more different that each other…

Picking up where the first Crank film left off, Crank: High Voltage keeps the ridiculously insane action going and manages to accelerate the pace even more. Starring Jason Statham and Amy Smart and directed by Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine, Crank: High Voltage will easily be the most electryfing sequel you’ll see in movie theatres this year. (Additional editing by our pal Doobie White and animations by Max Erdenberger)

Remember the musical A Chorus Line from when you were a kid? Maybe you know the film made about it starring Roy Scheider from Jaws? Well growing up in New York I couldn’t help but notice it as it was a Broadway staple for like, ever. To this day, the longest running American musical still continues it’s long standing run on Broadway and now the documentary directed by Adam Del Deo and James D. Stern premieres 33 years after the show’s original debut in 1976.

P.S.-Good luck this weekend Fern!

P.P.S.-You’re still aloof.

Murakami’s Superflat First Love

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Master painter/sculptor/Kanye West inspirer, Takashi Murakami continues his collaborations with Louis Vuitton with the Multicolor Spring Pallete collection. And to commemorate their latest pairing, Murakami has released the trailer for his animated short film entitled Superflat First Love. Premiering April 28th, 2009, Superflat First Love is the follow up to the Superflat Monogram project Murakami created with LV back in 2003. For now you can feast your eyes on the 15 second trailer which doesn’t say too much yet. But like all Murakami’s work, animated or otherwise, be prepared for something bold and beautiful.

More Murakami from his legendary show at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles :

And just for kicks, here’s Murakami’s Inochi, (my favorite robo-alien-horny Japanese kid) :

And don’t forget about Kaikai & KiKi!

WWJD?

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Ever wonder what sort of crazy adventures Jesus went on after being resurrected from the dead? Yeah, me neither. But I imagine he did something like this:

Another great stop motion action sequence provided by monsieur Patrick Bolvin.
