Today I’ll be chumping out a few friends who’s hard work is currently hitting your home entertainment picture tubes as well as the internets.
And last but not least is freelance copywriter and Muay Thai fighter (not to mention 2004 Asshole of the Year) Chris Pouy. With a chance to realize a dream that any Los Angeles Laker fan would cut a pinkie toe off for, Chris was part of the team that came up with the concept of making a 3D Kobe Bryant take it to the superstars of the NBA (as well as shirt shooting mascots and even a hot dog vendor!) in the new commercial for NBA 2K10. With an assist from the team of incredible animators at Psyop (including homies Miguel Bautista and Ben Grangereau) and Eric B. and Rakim’s classic “Don’t Sweat the Technique”, the results of “Take Over” have been championship caliber. Just like the Lakers of course.
And if you’re downtown, you can also see a larger than life Kobe about to put it down on the Hotel Figueroa across the street from the Staples Center.

Next in the line of chums I’m championing today is my old Academy of Art running mate and man with the magic eye, cinematographer Joe Labisi. We already know Joe shoots tons of hip hop videos and he’s also been known to dabble in some comedy, but how about a comedic hip hop video? Well that’s just what Joe shot when he was called upon for this hilarious “90’s” hip hop video for the 2009 Vh1 Hip Hop Honors featuring the one and only Scoopy Giles (Tracy Morgan). I now give you Scoopy Giles’ “Dumplin’ Butt”:

First up is fellow film editor Avi Youabian and the new ABC hit series he’s one of the editors on, Flash Forward. I’ve seen Avi come up through the ranks of (the now defunct) Brass Knuckles Editorial as an intern in the early 2000’s, where I quickly bestowed the nickname “Aviwood” upon him knowing full well that he’d someday be working in the Hollywood studio system based on his tenacity, hustle, and of course his excitable fast talking style. He then went on to edit the Oscar winning short film West Bank Story in 2005 and a couple of Cold Case and 90210 episodes later he’s on to another hit. Catch up on what you may have missed before his episode of Flash Forward (titled “Black Swan”) premieres two Thursdays from now on October 15th!
Watch Flash Forward Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC or full episodes online at ABC.com.
