The Wild People Behind The Wild Things

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Over the course of the past five years, Spike Jonze has brought together his (un)usual crew of frequent collaborators, friends old and new, and a kid named Sonny in bringing the Wild Things to life. Meet some of them here from VBS.tv’s Art Talk series:

  • Production designer and Spike’s right hand man, K.K. Barrett (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Lost in Translation).

In his designs for “Wild Thing” creatures such as Carol, above, Sonny Gerasimonwicz was told to show personalities rather than copy Maurice Sendak’s style. (via the LA Times)

  • Music video veteran and one of my editing heroes, film editor Eric Zumbrunnen (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation). Click photo below to view Eric’s segment on VBS.tv.

  • And finally costume designer Casey Storm (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Zodiac). Click photo below to view Casey’s segment on VBS.tv.

The Fun Theory in a Trash Can

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Oh those silly Swedes, first with their physically active piano stairs and now their encouraging sound effect receptacles. When will they learn that the rest of the world doesn’t care about their little Fun Theory? Not to be discouraged, Volkswagen states their case with how throwing away trash can be fun: “To throw rubbish in the bin instead of onto the floor shouldn’t really be so hard. Many people still fail to do so. Can we get more people to throw rubbish into the bin, rather than onto the ground, by making it fun to do? See the results here.”

From the people who call trash/garbage “rubbish”, ad agency DDB and Volkswagen:

We believe that the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better is by making it fun to do. We call it The fun theory”
