I know I said I wasn’t going to do any sort of year end lists the other day, but there’s just something about lists that I just can’t resist. And when I can cherry pick from all the “best of” lists that suckers esteemed writers have diligently compiled on the interwebs, well it pretty much makes this list the list to look at. I mean, where else can you peruse a list that includes street art, Quentin Tarantino, NSFW music and viral videos, Manny Pacquiao, conservative conspiracies, repurposing tricks, National Geographic photos and iPhone apps all from one webpage?
So without further ado, and in no particular order other than alphabetical, I present to you my humble list of the best “best of” lists for the year 2009.

So there’s this new movie out called “Avatar” directed by newcomer James Cameron, right? Well apparently they used some crazy new technology to shoot it because it was filmed on a moon called Pandora in the Alpha Centauri star system which is pretty far at 4.4 light years from Earth. I mean filming on a moon, let alone an entirely different star system has got to be a first. And you know it’s all fact because Sigourney Weaver narrated this short doc which explores the plant and animal life on Pandora and Sigourney Weaver doesn’t just go and make things up. (via Wired)
As 2009 comes to a close, you’re sure to see lists of “the (fill in the blanks) of the year or decade” all over the internets. I did that last year and decided I’ll leave it to the true journalists at TIME and Manofest instead. But I do wonder what ever happened to the list makers of yesteryear, especially the viral ones. Like whatever happened to that hilariously humiliated Star Wars kid*? Or where did David go after he went to the dentist*? And what made that chipmunk so damn dramatic*? Well, guess which one of those three questions has now been dramatically answered via viral video? (*all answers below)
*Answers:
For the harassment he has had to endure ever since his “performance” hit the web, Star Wars kid settled out of court with the families of four of his schoolmates who had uploaded the historic video. He’s also become arguably the most famous “internet celebrity” to date.
After questioning reality while being filmed by his Dad, David went on to start his own charitable website (davidafterdentist.com) which sells shirts and stickers bearing David’s drug induced catchphrase, “Is this real life?”
The dramatic chipmunk is actually a prairie dog and is still at large terrorizing Japanese people. He is rumored to be headed to the Bahamas to continue his dramatizing.
Hope everyone continues to enjoy their new gifts and holiday time off this upcoming new year’s. For me it’s back to the non-stop Tribe editing grind as we find a way to finish the film for next week’s rough screening. And speaking of “Find a Way”…
In case you’re not feeling the holiday spirit just yet, here’s a Christmas classic just the way I remember it: “Jingle Bells” sung by an animated Punjabi Santa Claus missing several teeth. Created byNupur with music by Amartya Rahut for Nickelodeon. Wishing everyone has a happy and healthy holiday to close out the decade!
Still looking for that perfect gift to give this holiday season? How about a Handjob™? And with two Handjobs™ for only $4.95 how can you possibly go wrong? I was spot on with my gift recommendations last year (not suitable for children children’s books) and believe I’ve hit it out of the park again. Check and mate McDonalds gift certificates.
Also makes the perfect combo gift with the Dick Towel!
Just in time for the holidays comes Alma, an endearing Pixar-esque animated short film which calculatingly turns creepy in no less than five minutes flat. I’m talking “doll creepy”, which is slightly less creepy than “clown creepy” but on par with “puppet creepy”. Written and directed by Pixar alumRodrigo Blaas, Alma has won several awards this year and is sure to win several more for the nightmares it will be leaving behind during it’s limited online run (viewings end December 31st).
A brand new Massive Attack music video with a mini documentary on the classic 70’s porno The Devil In Miss Jones built in? Hell yes. Directed by Toby Dye, the video for Massive’s “Paradise Circus” from their upcoming album Heligoland stars an aged Georgina Spelvin (Miss Jones herself) as she candidly recounts her intro to porn, the making of the film and her love of the camera all cut against scenes from the actual porno. The new track also features the seductive voice of Mazzy Star’s lead singer Hope Sandoval. Between the simmering music and titillating imagery, it all adds up to a devilishly explicit yet highly artistic short film.
I’m sure most will be enjoying eggnog and holiday parties galore this weekend thus the lack of art openings and events to speak of. Thankfully we have singing ladies, cool clothing and big blue aliens to keep us busy.

Homie PM Tenore’sRVCA clothing company doesn’t just make awesome clothes, they’re steadfast supporters of the arts (Artist Network Program), publishers of ANP Quarterly and now provider of fashion to Angelinos with the opening of their Fairfax based store. Grandly opening this Sunday, RVCA’s new location adds to their flagship Haight & Ashbury store in San Francisco. (thanks to the omnipresent Meghan Edwards for the reminder!)
Oh yeah, and there’s this small 3D film by littleJimmy Cameron coming out too…
It seems as though Jon Stewart and the writers of The Daily Show are feeling quite generous this holiday season as they neatly wrapped our nation’s health care woes in a four minute gift of comedy filled with irrational protesters, appropriate film clips and of course our favorite senator who doesn’t like the idea of helping people in need, Joe Lieberman.
Holiday bonus: The last tea party protest of the decade stocking stuffer complete with typical crazy Fox News person!
