See the deliciousness that was last weekends 1st LA Street Food Fest at their newly created Flickr page. Yeah it’s true, many people were pissed because of the (up to) two hour waits in lines at some of the more popular trucks and many more were pissed that they didn’t even get a chance to step inside the event (capacity was quickly reached). But if you and your friends were savvy enough to understand the concept of “divide and conquer”, have ever been to Coachella, or waited in line for beer at Dodger Stadium then you knew what to do and what to expect. All in all it was a fun and sun filled Saturday afternoon eating, sharing and walking with thousands of fellow hungry Angelinos. Congratulations to Sonja and Shawna for their tasty success, LA is looking forward to a 2nd helping of the Street Food Fest (hopefully) soon.
“Get ready to EAT YOUR HEART OUT!Celebrate and discover LA’s mouth watering street food scene with an annual outdoor festival that promises to be a delicious good time…
We gathered the best in the city and told them to create mouth-watering, exclusive tasting menus for us. The result? Amazing small plate and bite-sized goodies, with most vendors offering day-of-event-only items, just for you! And with their special LA Street Food Fest prices of just $1-5 ($2-3 average), you’ll be able to discover and eat from as many as you can fit in!”
“for a week (more or less depending on demand), the only artwork that will be on offer will be all Steve Powers, all week long. All your favorite icons, punchlines, poignant reminders of the futility of life, hilarious illustrations of our inadequacies, True depictions of true love from the Love Letter project, and of course, PIGEONS. Its all here, it’s cheap, its permanent. No, I’m not tattooing, no skills. I will, however, sign your arm and let one of the skilled pros on staff at Todd’s shop re-ink it, fair enough?”
“Another Elebration, another storm bringing massive precipitation. In spite of the snow, Espo’s Love Letter Tattoo Shop (a division of ICY SIGNS, a subsidiary of Mark Surface Intl.) opened right at the happy hour of 5. Two excellent co-defendants stepped right up: Nick encouraged me to invent something on the spot, while Michelle chose “whats mine is yours” and got it bolder on her shoulder. WHOA, I’ve got that feeling I get when I put work in a good spot. It’s like a seeing diamond in a moonbeam. 10 sheets of flash are in the shop now, we’ll add 10 more on tuesday, 10 more on thursday, and 10 more on friday. Dont see that special piece of flash? come again, rewind till you find the fine line to put on your spine. Or if you want, you can suggest to Es what works best, HELL YES”
When you’re dancing your ass off in the desert come mid April the smaller side stages can be the most fun. But, I mean c’mon, the main stages are ridiculous this year: Jay-Z, LCD, De La, Sly, The Specials, Grizzly Bear, Hot Chip, Major Lazer, Thom Yorke…need I go on? Just a ridiculous 2010 Coachella lineup.
So Ronald McDonald, Colonel Sanders, the Burger King and Jack from Jack in the Box drink a bunch of shots, smoke some weed, do a bunch of blow and walk into a strip club…and thus Rad Omen’s music video for “Rad Anthem” is born. And with a special appearance by Reno 911’s Nick Swardson as a certain red-headed lover of square burgers, fast food has never been worse for you.
Special thanks to the rad BadAndySoria for the heads up!

This past Sunday The Simpsons celebrated their 20th year on air with their 450th episode (which, by the way, was as funny as I’ve seen my favorite family in years). So after two decades worth of absurd exploits it should come as no surprise that someone has actually tried to make something from the cartoon a reality. Yes, we’ve already seen a real Simpsons house out in Nevada and some disturbingly real photoshopping, but how about an actual Tomacco plant? You know the episode, the family moves to a farm and Homer plants “a little bit of everything” in the ground to see what comes up. A cross breed between tomatoes and tobacco sprouts and the family, as well as the livestock, develop a deep addiction (watch 2nd half here). Here’s the climactic clip in Spanish that should give you the idea:
Well Oregonite Rob Baur, an operations analyst with too much time on his hands, decided to try to grow a Tomacco plant himself and wouldn’t you know it, it worked.
“In 2003, inspired by an episode of The Simpsons, he grafted together a tobacco root and a tomato stem to make ‘tomacco’. Baur’s tomacco, on the other hand, has made him something of a Simpsons legend and given him a story to dine out on to this day (at wastewater conferences, he says, he often gets introduced as ‘Mr Tomacco’). After the plant produced its first fruit, he sent a press release about what he’d done to a local television station, thinking they might find it reasonably funny.“
I know I said I wasn’t going to do any sort of year end lists the other day, but there’s just something about lists that I just can’t resist. And when I can cherry pick from all the “best of” lists that suckers esteemed writers have diligently compiled on the interwebs, well it pretty much makes this list the list to look at. I mean, where else can you peruse a list that includes street art, Quentin Tarantino, NSFW music and viral videos, Manny Pacquiao, conservative conspiracies, repurposing tricks, National Geographic photos and iPhone apps all from one webpage?
So without further ado, and in no particular order other than alphabetical, I present to you my humble list of the best “best of” lists for the year 2009.

I’m sure most will be enjoying eggnog and holiday parties galore this weekend thus the lack of art openings and events to speak of. Thankfully we have singing ladies, cool clothing and big blue aliens to keep us busy.

Homie PM Tenore’sRVCA clothing company doesn’t just make awesome clothes, they’re steadfast supporters of the arts (Artist Network Program), publishers of ANP Quarterly and now provider of fashion to Angelinos with the opening of their Fairfax based store. Grandly opening this Sunday, RVCA’s new location adds to their flagship Haight & Ashbury store in San Francisco. (thanks to the omnipresent Meghan Edwards for the reminder!)
Oh yeah, and there’s this small 3D film by littleJimmy Cameron coming out too…
For one night only, New York homies Mel and Steve bring delicious treats and meats for Angelinos tomorrow night as Asiadog once again heads West! Just what is Asiadog you ask? Please allow Mel and Steve to break it down for you: “Asiadogs are hot dogs with Asian-inspired toppings. Born from a love of NYC, we wanted to push the limits of one of its most popular street foods by adding our own personal touch with super-fresh ingredients. For years, we’ve been cooking for our diverse crew of friends and family. That passion eventually evolved into a weekly event with the basic principles of GOOD FOOD, GOOD FRIENDS, and GOOD FUN. So come check out one of our seven unique dogs…or our signature burger. We hope to see you soon.”
The Asiadog mobile restaurant is sponsored by Knockaround and will be operating in downtown LA at Tony’s Saloon from 7-11pm. Get your dogs while they’re hot, and Asian!
