The 30th anniversary of Silver Lake’s always festive street festival, Sunset Junction, goes down this weekend full of the usual too many bands to name, drinking, dancing, carnival rides and games, fried foods, street vendors, drinking and more drinking. Also drinking!
KAWS, one of the most interesting men in art, will soon be joining Dos Equis’“Most Interesting Man in the World” as the New York street legend lends his signature “xx’s” to the labels of the delicious Mexican beer (which literally translates to “two x’s”). Unfortunatley for us Americanos, the limited edition brews will only be available south of the border beginning this September. Make sure passports and livers are up to date.

ESPO goes from graffiti to glasswear and joins Japan’s Aoshima, who herself takes a break from Takashi Murakami’s collective Kaikai Kiki, to each create limited edition bottle/pitchers for Absolut Vodka’s Absolut Art of Sharingcampaign which simply looks intoxicating.

On the day America celebrates it’s birthday The Cinefamily celebrates America celebrating it’s birthday with their 3rd Annual Cinefamily 4th of July BBQ Blowout. co-presented by Arthur Magazine, the evening’s festivities features the customary beers and BBQ, Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Celebration, the patriotic zombie film Uncle Sam as well as “the fantastic sights and sounds of virtual fireworks and other movie mayhem!!!!”
From The Cinefamily:
“We’d like to invite you all to the best 4th of July party since the Capitol Celebration of 1778, when George Washington gave the United States Army an artillery salute and a double ration of rum! Well, we’re gonna give you a quintuple ration of cinema with one of our signature Cinefamily “Mondo” nights. It’s all planned out: an open door to our sweet back patio, good music, friends, and that most American of traditions — a BBQ, so bring something to grill! And if it gets too hot, just step inside our nice air-conditioned theatre, and catch our marathon film festival. “Mondo” means a world of weirdness built around a theme, and tonight’s theme is America, so it’s a patriotic free-for-all of film formats, from DVDs to 16mm industrials, to 35mm features. We’ll be keeping the fest alive all night long, just like our grill! Check out the highlights:
5PM: We light the grill. We begin the festivities…
6PM-ish: WILLIE NELSON’S 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION!
An incredibly rare boozy ‘n woozy full-length concert film, shot at the 1977 edition of Willie’s very informal annual 4th of July concert festival. Featuring Willie, Waylon, Leon Russell, Doug Kershaw and other great country stars singin’, sweatin’, partyin’ — and most importantly of all, drinkin’. These folks were some of the ultimate party animals, with Leon Russell emerging as the King of Booze in some of the most gloriously inebriated footage ever shot! As Austin, TX’s Alamo Drafthouse says: “These good ol’ boys knew as much about partying as Marie Curie knew about radium. Be there!!!!”
8:08PM: VIRTUAL FIREWORKS SHOW!
According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the July 4th sun will set at 8:08 PM. We wouldn’t want you to miss the fireworks, so we’ll be screening best-of videos from international fireworks competitions, experimental films and enough jingoistic eye candy to make you oooh and aaah!
8:30-ish: UNCLE SAM
The climax of the night is this patriotic back-from-the-dead revenge slasher from the fevered minds of William Lustig (Maniac) and Larry Cohen (It’s Alive, God Told Me To), featuring a Gulf War solider killed by friendly fire who returns to extract bloody payback from any draft dodgers, flag burners and oily military men he can find. Perfect viewing for when you’re chomping down the last charred remains of any remaining hot dog from the grill. Abbondanza!”
If you’re in the bay this Saturday stop by our dear old friend Pep Nguyen’s uniquely tasty steakhouse in the San Jose area as Grill ‘Emcelebrates their two year anniversary in a truly classy fashion: with all day Jameson drink specials, Cabo Wabo girls and Pep’s delicious meats on and in your grill. Hungry for food? How about for art? Or maybe you’re just thirsty for free booze amongst food inspired art? Then look no further than the international group show Palate where the idea of food as both a medium and muse is explored through art and installation at the Scion Space in Culver City.
From Scion:
“If cooking is an art form, then food is the most common medium of artistic expression in the world. Opening May 22, Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery presents “Palate,” a group exhibition of internationally lauded artists in which food takes its rightful place inside the gallery.
“Palate,” which means the sense of taste, but also references an artist’s palette, will showcase a wide array of food-related art from Martha Rich’s feminine, cake-laden illustrations to Alan Macdonald’s classically rendered paintings of pilgrims that feature the unlikely additions of grocery bags, baked beans and chips. “Palate” will also include James Reynolds’ series of photographs documenting Death Row inmates’ last meal requests, as well as Jeff Vespa’s giant Polaroids of fast food burgers. Scott Hove’s monstrous cake sculptures will be on display, as will Tamara Kostianovsky’s realistic sculptures of slabs of meat, which she makes with articles of clothing. Clare Crespo will crochet a smorgasbord of fun foods, and Jeph Gurecka will build an installation out of bread he bakes himself that explores the idea of food as sustenance.”

Also on hand will be Chef Shawn Bucher with Brit inspired delicacies.
More from the R&R:
“On May 15th, upstart Los Angeles gallery R&R will host Love Them & Leave Them, the introspective photographic exhibition from international photographer and award-winning director Nicola Collins. The show will comprise 45 images of abandoned sofas and chairs encountered by Collins on the streets of L.A. in a style that recalls the grit and conflict of her 2008 documentary The End, a study of London gangsters (one being her father, convicted armed robber Les Falco) that won her five awards and 13 nominations. The exhibit is part of Britweek, a series of local events celebrating Brits in California.”

“The 1st 8th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational will surely be the best thing to happen to mankind, ever! Well maybe second to that whole ‘landing on the moon’ thing, but as far as mankind’s topmost achievements, it’s totally way up there!” says Tim Walker, the event’s founder and organizer. “We have listened to the feedback from last year, spent a lot of time redesigning the event and have turned this event into something for everyone with both a grilling competition AND a grilled cheese festival with multiple vendors on hand to sell samples to the hungry masses!”
