Happy Belated Water Day

Apparently yesterday was the 16th annual World Water Day which is the “U.N.-based initiative that seeks to raise awareness to the millions of Africans that live without daily access to clean, safe water.” There’s apparently a lot more I’m not aware of when it comes to the state of water in the rest of the world:

  • One billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water. That’s one in six of us.
  • 2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation, specifically a toilet.
  • Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.
  • Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation, 90% are children under 5 years old.
  • $20 can give a person in Africa clean, safe drinking water for 20 years.
100% goes to direct project costs. donate >
