Although it appears as though he’s sticking with his signature pink characters, backgrounds and animated landscapes, the ever growing Buff Monster goes Beyond the Pink at Culver City’s Corey Helford Gallery.
From CHG:
“For “Beyond The Pink”, Buff Monster creates a new series of acrylic-on-panel works that radiate with his signature pink neons, Superflat style, and disarmingly subversive characters. The artist’s futuristic playgrounds bounce with creative expression as multi-hued argyle pyramids intermix with melting facades and floating faces.
Presenting his works in a larger and more detailed context than before, Buff Monster revisits his classic ice cream and maraschino cherry imagery with an eyeful of fresh inspiration. Returning from his recent travels to open the “Art From The New World” museum exhibition in Bristol, England, the artist adopts a more experimental approach, blending his iconic graphics with new landscapes, as well as introducing portraits for the first time.
“This new body of work is influenced by the history of Western art that I saw throughout Europe. My time at the Louvre viewing Renaissance paintings was truly inspiring. The National Gallery in London had some amazing pieces as well. And then visiting the Tate Modern was a bit of a shock after seeing nothing but classical paintings, but the pop stars like Lichtenstein and Warhol still get my pulse racing,” Buff Monster adds.
Upstairs in the loft, a vibrant series of flattened metal spray cans customized by Buff Monster will be on display. Open to the public, the reception for “Beyond The Pink” will take place on Saturday, September 4 from 7 to 10pm, and the show will be on view until September 22, 2010.”

“After nine years, the annual Vice Photo Issue and Exhibition has become an anticipated cultural institution. This year, Vice’s Photo Issue is comprised entirely of still life photography – a departure from years past.
For the photography exhibit, opening August 14 at Scion Installation L.A., the curatorial reigns have been handed to Jonnie Craig, longtime staff photographer of the British edition of Vice magazine. About the theme of the show, Jonnie says: “The pictures gathered for this exhibition express youth in a number of forms—from train surfing to hiking in the woods to working a dead end job—every image acting as an entry of what I have experienced youth to be.” The featured photographers are Angela Boatwright, Asger Carlsen, Jonnie Craig, Jackson Eaton, Seth Fluker, Nicholas Haggard, Jerry Hsu, Kevin Long, Ross McDonnell, Sophie Mörner, Patrick O’Dell, Alex Olson, Valerie Phillips, Jared Ritz, Lele Saveri, RJ Shaugnessy, David Benjamin Sherry, Peter Sutherland, Patrick Tsai, Sean Vegezzi and Gavin Watson.”

The epic oil paintings of Eric Joyner reveal the secret domesticated life of robots in his solo Donut Logic show invading the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City.
From CHG:
“For his third solo exhibition at the gallery, Eric Joyner unveils a bold new twist to his decade-long odyssey of donuts and robots. Exploring new territories, Joyner’s metal humanoids reveal the secret life of robots: they sport tattoos, balance careers and families, and expose their hidden desires. “Donut Logic” will also debut the addition of cupcakes to Joyner’s signature glazed landscapes.
“I think the robots in my paintings reflect how a lot of us act and feel”, explains Joyner, and for “Donut Logic” his robots are more domestic than before, enjoying life’s comforts and small pleasures in a post apocalyptic world, such as gardening and bicycling.“

Also…new works and limited edition prints from Emberley himself!
From Scion:
“For “Ed Emberley & Friends,” each artist will create a six-foot-by-six-foot wood panel that is a mash-up of their own style and that of Ed Emberley’s instructional drawing books. The tribute paintings will be exhibited alongside examples of each artist’s individual work. After the show, each of the large painted panels will be donated for long-term display in children’s hospitals around the United States. Emberley will have the largest presence in the show, contributing work from his archives including dozens of pages from the 1970s original mockups of his books. He will have recent drawings of his classic characters for sale, as well as a limited-edition print made especially for the show.”

Talent and loveliness converge in Culver City as the lovely and talented Natalia Fabia returns to the Corey Helford gallery with her ode to Japan in her show Fashionable Aftertaste Without End.
From CHG:
“Fashionable Aftertaste Without End” features twelve oil paintings that have been in development over the past year, and the exhibition will showcase the debut of Fabia’s first full nude painting, a stunning fusion of male desires and Kaiju toys. “Kawaii transforms everyday objects into supreme cuteness”, explains Fabia. “It is everything I find irresistible and cute, yet can’t explain why. It is a concept I totally fell in love with and validates my crazy random obsessions.”
Also on display will be a spectacular six-foot chandelier designed by Fabia, her visionary monument to Japanese pop culture. One hundred handcrafted figurines, each designed and initialed by the artist, will be suspended from the opulent fuchsia sculptural installation, along with thousands of Swarovski crystals, sparkling pink chain and laser-cut objets d’art. Ten different Kawaii-inspired designs make up the collection of limited-edition figurines and many of them are featured in Fabia’s new painting series.”

“Roberts & Tilton is pleased to present Wild Thing, an exhibition of works comprised of various approaches to what is considered wild and untamable, yet simultaneously conceptual and laborious. The works included in Wild Thing are not the embodiment or exacting replica of any one “wild thing,” but of any and all things considered “wild.” By presenting a selection of international and local artists, we come to realize that no distance or variation in culture has the ability to jeopardize the absolute integrity or the personal experience of what each viewer might consider “wild.”

The dark, faceless characters of Brandi Milne’s whimsical paintings descend upon Culver City’s Corey Helford Gallery as she opens her first solo show in years with My Heart Shall Not Pass.
From CHG:
“Milne’s second solo exhibition with the gallery reveals a more personal side to her paintings than before. For “My Heart Shall Not Fear”, Milne explores narratives about life, death and new awakenings. Her work embraces a brave new direction, juxtaposing her delicate signature imagery with more intense themes. And Milne’s fresh artistic voice skillfully weaves together a series of visual fables that are as playful as they are poignant.”
