The inspiring little art documentary I was lucky enough to edit, Beautiful Losers starring Barry McGee (TWIST), Ed Templeton, Geoff McFetridge, Margaret Kilgallen, Harmony Korine, Stephen Powers (ESPO), Jo Jackson, Chris Johanson, Thomas Campbell, Mike Mills and Shepard Fairey among others, premiered on the Sundance Channel last night as our film begins it’s weekly run through the month of August.

Curators of contemporary fine goods, books, art, music, film and just about anything else that was created creatively, Family packs up their shop and heads east with their New York pop up shop Thirty Days NY. With an assist from Absolut, Kramer and company open shop with King Kong: Art From Los Angeles featuring California’s finest including Geoff McFetridge, Ed and Deanna Templeton, Ashley Macomber, Cali Dewitt and Hamburger Eyes amongst many more. Also on hand for the inaugural evening will be our lovely friend ASKA with Brian Degraw (Gang Gang Dance) as they perform sets to a light show created by Gary Panter and Joshua White.

“THIRTY DAYS NY is a celebration of the merger of arts and culture . Our challenge was building out, organizing, managing, and presenting a live gallery space open to the public for one month only in the heart of New York City. The 2nd weekend of the new year brings a plethora of group shows to Los Angeles along with a Hamburger weekender.

• Gallery 1988 on Melrose has been pumping out art shows depicting some of our most recognizable pop culture heroes and villains over the years (I AM 8-BIT, Crazy 4 Cult, Lost, etc.) so it comes as no surprise that our favorite childhood muscle bound bowl-cut hero from Eternia has over 100 artists making pieces of him and his pals for the show Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

• You Can Heal Your Life! at the Circus Gallery on Lexington that is at their group show which features the works of Sister Corita among others. Curated by Emma Gray, the “art works in this show seek to address issues of religion, spirituality and self-help through performance, sculpture, painting, video and printmaking.“

• For animal and art lovers alike, Thinkspace in Silver Lake is putting out A Cry For Help, a group show of over 100 artists with the goal of raising awareness about the plight of animals in our modern world. *20% of all proceeds will be donated to Born Free USA.

• New Image Art on La Brea is run by some amazing women (Marsea Goldberg, Amber Abramson) so it should come as no surprise that their current group show features some of today’s powerful women photographers with the group show Put Your Finger on the Button. Included in the show are two of my favorite photographers, regardless of sex, the awesome Cheryl Dunn and lovely Deanna Templeton (who you may have both seen in our film Beautiful Losers).

• Speaking of Deanna Templeton, her husband Ed Templeton will be featured in the show for the Japanese publication Megane Zine at the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery off of Melrose. In addition to a limited edition HVW8 x Megane t-shirt designed by Ed for sale, comic zine’s will be given free to the first 20 people on January 9th.

• And finally wrap up your weekend with family, laughter and Hamburger as the Cinefamily on Fairfax extends their Comedy Death Ray series with Neil Hamburger’s tribute to Frank Sinatra, Jr. I repeat Frank Sinatra, JUNIOR. In honor of Frank Jr.’s birthday, Hamburger has assembled this evening of rare, vintage Frank Jr. TV variety specials and film appearances!

Our little film that could, Beautiful Losers, is coming to DVD next week (Dec. 8th) courtesy of Adam Yauch’s (MCA of the Beastie Boys) film distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories. To commemorate the films release our trusty leader/director Aaron Rose will be coming back to LA to introduce Beautiful Losers Shorts, rare films by the artists and friends of the film. Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural movements of a generation. In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories…speaking to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.

This Saturday January 24th, New Image Art Gallery turns the tender age of 15 years old. To celebrate, this Los Angeles landmark of culture has invited back some of the most prolific painters, photographers, president makers, and vandals to have ever hung pictures on their walls. One look at the list of featured artists below and you’ll soon realize that New Image Art is the place to be Saturday night. And although Marsea has opened up the space next door, expect this proper party to be pretty packed so get there early! Musical performance by No Age too!
