East coast skateboarding meets West coast comic booking as the Secret Headquarters welcomes skate rag Born Ugly creators James Callahan and Mickael Broth to their Silver Lake comic book park for their show Drawings, Photos and Drawings of Photos as well as the release of the latest issue of Born Ugly.
From SHQ:
“Brewed in the bars and backyard ramps of Richmond Virginia, Born Ugly Magazine is the voice and visual of
the everyday skateboarder. With content focused on the lives of people that skateboard for the
love of it, and not a paycheck, Born Ugly sets itself apart from the homogenized glut of skateboard mags
currently saturating skate shop counters. Add to that layouts infused with illustration soaked in Masonite dust and beer sweat, and you’ve got Born Ugly.
James Callahan. Mickael Broth. Skateboarding. Comics. Toilet Humor. Drawings. Barf. Some other stuff that we are not aware of. Get into it. They will be at Secret Headquarters Friday August 6th starting at 7pm with the newest issue of BORN UGLY as well as a slew of drawings and paintings. Crack a beer with these east coast powerhouses.
There will be drinks. We hope that there will not be actual barf.
Be sure to ask about karate chopping a toilet that has been set on fire…”

From the fam at Family:
“Summer Drawing Show presents a varied group of artists: each utilizing the drawn line in their own highly personal way, each with an aesthetic instantly recognizable as their own.
Ben Jones’ work is fundamentally about form and geometric shapes, but also cranky, bedridden wizard-kings, oven pizza, and the nuclear apocalypse. Meryl Smith’s immaculately rendered zoo animals bear expressions oozing with emotion and pathos, and are very funny looking. Geoff Mcfetridge’s hyper-sensitive line forms images of supreme comedic wit. Denise Kupferschmidt’s still lives and elegant abstracts are so striking, they could be religious icons from a lost culture. Richard McGuire lends a masterly, tension-filled emotion to each pen and brush stroke. C.F. has a clear, seemingly effortless rendering virtuosity without losing a naive joy; whether offering sexy, psychedelic, horrific, or pretty drawings with a distinctive touch.”

“Jonathan LeVine Gallery in association with Choque Cultural gallery is pleased to present Two-Way Street, a group exhibition featuring work by four Brazilian street artists: Alexandre Tadeu Alves (aka Chivitz), João Paulo (aka NOVE), Márcio Penha (aka Presto) and Ramon Martins, in what will be their debut exhibition in New York.
Two-Way Street is the latest installment in what has been an ongoing cross-cultural dialog between Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York and Choque Cultural in São Paulo, Brazil. Work by the four artists in this show represent the new generation of street art coming out of São Paulo today, as these artists are younger than those who have previously exhibited here in the US.”

Two of my faves join forces in New York as Orange County’s master painter Jeff Soto returns to the venerable Jonathan LeVine Gallery with his robots and creatures who constantly battle beautifully over love and death in tow as he opens his solo show Lifecycle. “In conjunction with this exhibition, the artist will be painting a site-specific public mural in New York City, and releasing a new limited-edition print.”
Also…joining Jeff and Jonathan in the NYC fun is Dave Cooper with his solo show Mangle in the project room.
“This new body of work feel like a tipping point or breakthrough to me- I’ve been exploring new themes, new techniques, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and possibly breaking the surface into a new direction. I usually don’t feel like this but it’s been a rollercoaster ride, full of discoveries and failures, emotions and hard work. This show has been more personal than those in the past, as I’ve had to dive into the subjects of family and life and death. It has also been extremely rewarding and I’m excited to share them. I’m going to keep painting and exploring this new path but this will be my last solo exhibit for a while. So come by if you can!”

When stop motion and a flip book meet in a dark alley, smoke acid, make bad decisions and then engage in some brutal lovemaking, 9 months later you get VIDEOGIOCO (which, from Italian, appropriately translates to “video game”).
