Jim Houser’s canvases packed with emotionally charged cartoon-like characters and subtle sayings bodies up to Shepard Fairey’s Echo Park gallery Subliminal Projects as his show The Homebody opens this Saturday.
From Subliminal Projects:
“Subliminal Projects is pleased to present the homebody, a solo exhibition of new original works by Jim Houser. Through his paintings, installations and mixed-media pieces, Houser tempers earnest introspection with whimsical characters, warm colors and organic materials.
On display, Houser’s aesthetic vernacular consumes the entire gallery space, with installations and murals throughout. In recent years, he has taken to integrating music into the experience, often with an original score he composes to complement his visual pieces. The Homebody marks the first time Houser will be releasing his soundtrack as a recording, with a limited-edition vinyl record available for purchase.”

Once again it’s dance fever time as DJ Spinna presents Soul Slam VIfeaturing nothing but the best of Prince and Michael Jackson classics at the Echoplex in Echo Park. You know there’s serious good times to be had here.
From The Echo:
“This event centers around the honoring of two of the most eclectic and innovative artists to date, Michael Jackson and Prince! From the inception of this concept back in 1999 the response for SOUL SLAM has been enormous. DJ Spinna sets the tone of this event as he lays down track after track from both MJ’s and Princes extensive music catalogues along with tracks of their cohorts, i.e.; Jermaine Jackson, Vanity, Janet, Sheila E., J5, The Time etc. Soul Slam returns to LA this June!”
Women and art I love. Women who create art I love even more. Echo Park’s Subliminal Projects gathers a who’s who of some of today’s female artists whose strong voices can be seen anywhere, from the streets to the galleries and everywhere in-between, for the group show SUBject/subJECT. Among the powerful women in the show include Swoon, Elizabeth McGrath, Kime Buzzelli, Jesse Spears and Nikki McClure.
*Also…“Ten percent of proceeds from all SUBject/subJECT art sales will go to the Los Angeles Downtown Women’s Center, dedicated to providing permanent, supportive housing and a safe and healthy community for homeless women.”
More from Subliminal Projects:
“SUBject/subJECT examines women’s use of public platforms in mass media, inviting both artists and viewers into a dialogue about role models, self-image and the messages women project in both the mainstream and alternative media. Says Cheriel, “Now that women have ‘equal rights,’ what are we trying to say? What’s our subject? Since female artists remain underrepresented in galleries and museums, we created this show as a platform for emerging women artists to represent!”

Now I’m not the biggest Depeche Mode fan, or even a fan at all actually, but the devoted fanatics that make up the doc The Posters Came From the Walls make me wonder if I should take another listen to the 80’s supergroup that helped define a generation of kids. The Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theater along with Art Los Angeles Contemporary in association with Gavin Brown’s enterprise, presents the Los Angeles premiere of The Posters Came From The Walls a film which “tells stories of faith and devotion from around the world in this fascinating and inspired documentary about fandom.”
Although it may be cold and damp in LA, this weekend’s openings and events are sure to heat you up physically, mentally, emotionally and hopefully drunkenly.

The Multi-Plane group show at Culver City’s Corey Helford Gallery marks their biggest group show of the year in a throwback to early animation where “each artist created an original painting using the multi-plane, which was made famous by pioneer animators Ub Iwerks, Max Fleischer, Bill Garrity, and Walt Disney. Consisting of three individual surfaces housed in a custom-made frame, the multi-plane creates depth and a three-dimensional effect through two glass foreground layers and a background wood panel.” Among the incredible lineup of artists are Todd Schorr, Gary Baseman, COOP, Tim Biskup, Sylvia Ji, Ron English, Luke Chueh, Jeff Soto, Carlos Ramos and Sage Vaughn.

The music Gods smiled down upon me on Friday as I was somehow able to get tickets to Thom Yorke’s super secret, super sold out surprise show at the Echoplex in Echo Park. Playing brand new music for the first time with his brand new band with no name which featured Flea, Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco, the show was supposed to be a “warm-up” for Sunday and Monday’s Orpheum shows but instead the capacity crowd of 325 (including Spike Jonze, Ellen Page, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt among others) was treated to a full 90 minute set! As intimate as small venue shows usually are, this one was special and will be playing over and over in my head for quite some time.
Extra special thanks to Steven Murashige for using my camera properly!
