Make Something!! with Aaron Rose and Friends in NYC

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Our close collaborator, inspiring curator and dear friend Aaron Rose relaunches his dream art and design school in New York City this July and August with the return of the Make Something!! workshops. Originally spawned from a joint venture between our film Beautiful Losers and the generous contributions of Nike Sportswear, this latest incarnation of the D.I.Y. workshops aimed at teens features world renowned artists (Os Gemeos, Todd James, Ari Marcopoulos and Jeff Canham amongst others) as well as creatives from Converse, Nike and Brand Jordan working with students to create in a variety of mediums in Lower Manhattan.

The workshops culminate with a celebration of the students’ artwork created during the classes with a parade at the world famous Rucker Park in conjunction with the World Basketball Festival Celebration Event in August.

Register and sign up for the month long workshop events here or here. Class schedule, teachers, details and more can be found at Makesomethingschool.com as well as from head teacher Aaron Rose below.

Alsoclick here to see the film series of the inaugural Make Something!! workshops featuring KAWS, Ed Templeton, Money Mark, Mike Mills and more (including me!)

Make Something!!
July 12 through August 17, 2010
Manhattan, NY

From A. Rose:

“Not sure if everyone knows, but for the last three years we’ve been doing D.I.Y. creativity workshops for teens under the banner of Make Something!! This summer we’re partnering with Nike, Jordan and Converse to open a five-week long “pop-up” school house in NYC filled with amazing classes taught by fantastic artists, designers, musicians and all around champs in their fields. I thought I’d put the word out as I’m pretty excited about it.

Just as a teaser we’re offering classes like this: Documentary photo with Ari Marcopoulos, puppet-making with Todd James, sign-painting with Jeff Canham, Costume design with Cassette Playa, a mural workshop with Os Gemeos…plus shoe and garment design with Nike/Converse/Jordan designers and many, many more!

Check out our website for info and dates as they develop.

http://www.makesomethingschool.com

Classes are filling up quick, but if anyone is New York-based and has kids who want to attend (ages 13-18), email us at <info@makesomethingschool.com> and we’ll try to fit them in.

All the best for an inspiring Summer!!”

The Creative Life of Barry McGee

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The very first time I saw a Barry McGee drawing of a sad, anguished face on a wall in the streets of San Francisco in the early 90’s, it was the first time I began to look at “street art” as my art. At the time Barry (aka TWIST) and his wife at the time, the late great Margaret Kilgallen, were tearing up SF with murals, signs, stickers and tags, large scale pieces and beautifully detailed line work the likes of which had previously not been seen in the streets. The art, which could easily be seen walking or riding the bus, completely blew my mind and would help usher in a new format for a different type of artist to showcase their talents.

Fast forward to over ten years later, when in the summer of 2007 Aaron Rose gave me the opportunity of a lifetime: edit the film Beautiful Losers. The documentary, which featured Barry and Margaret and many other artists I appreciated and looked up to (Shepard Fairey, Steve Powers, Geoff McFetridge, Ed Templeton, and more), was an absolute dream job come true. I can proudly say we made a film that captured the spirit of creativity and inspiration I saw on those San Francisco streets that had a profound effect on me so many years ago.

Now the notoriously camera shy Barry is back in front of the lens as he describes his process and latest retrospective for the SF MOMA’s 75th anniversary show filmed by The Creative Lives crew.

COVERAGE: Ed Templeton’s The Seconds Pass

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

UPDATE: More from Ed’s Toy Machine blog:

“I went minimal for this show, a departure from my usual chaotic display. But there was a theme and concept for this show that I stuck to. All photos were shot from a moving car, and all hung in a straght line.”

Last week Ed opened his latest photo show The Seconds Pass at Culver City’s Roberts & Tilton to the usual large gathering of skaters, photographers and art appreciators alike. And what we all saw was a show that was slightly different for Ed, as in streamlined opposed to his signature clustering style, more “in the moment” snapshots and far less nude/explicit imagery than what viewers have grown accustomed to over the years. All in all, Ed’s The Second Pass is definitely worth a second pass.

Show runs at Roberts & Tilton through April 3, 2010.

Many thanks to my friend Yoshi Shimura of Megane Zine and Star Graphics fame for providing the following photos from the opening. Please click here to see Yoshi’s entire set.
