THURSDAY (Aug 5): Summer Drawing Show featuring Geoff McFetridge @ Family

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

With summer in full swing, our fine friends at Family on Fairfax bring you the Summer Drawing Show featuring Geoff McFetridge, Ben Jones, Meryl Smith, Richard McGuire, Denise Kupferschmidt and C.F.

Also…the special summer night opening party will feature tunes provided by DJ Juan Velasquez (Abe Vigoda) and Katie Byron (Dublab).

From the fam at Family:

“Summer Drawing Show presents a varied group of artists: each utilizing the drawn line in their own highly personal way, each with an aesthetic instantly recognizable as their own.

Ben Jones’ work is fundamentally about form and geometric shapes, but also cranky, bedridden wizard-kings, oven pizza, and the nuclear apocalypse. Meryl Smith’s immaculately rendered zoo animals bear expressions oozing with emotion and pathos, and are very funny looking. Geoff Mcfetridge’s hyper-sensitive line forms images of supreme comedic wit. Denise Kupferschmidt’s still lives and elegant abstracts are so striking, they could be religious icons from a lost culture. Richard McGuire lends a masterly, tension-filled emotion to each pen and brush stroke. C.F. has a clear, seemingly effortless rendering virtuosity without losing a naive joy; whether offering sexy, psychedelic, horrific, or pretty drawings with a distinctive touch.”

Summer Drawing Show
Opening reception: Thursday, August 5th, 7-10pm
Family
436 N Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036
Show runs from August 5 through September 7, 2010

Geoff McFetridge is Part of It

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

And you should be too. From his fine art to his commercial work to his movie titles to his thoughts and personality in our film Beautiful Losers, Geoff McFetridge’s style is elegantly simple and easily understood. Fortunately for us, Geoff’s latest stylings in the name of a good cause make it on to a t-shirt and tote bag with proceeds donated to the Library Foundation of Los Angeles in conjunction with the good people at Part of it. Be sure to check out other artists involved and their causes at Partofit.org.

And just who is Part of it? Read on readers:

“Founded in 2007 by Christopher and Kathleen Sleboda, Part of It works with artists to create products for causes they are passionate about. Sales from products benefit charities chosen by the artists.

Part of It stems from our belief that artists (and conscientious consumers) can make a positive difference in the world by supporting causes close to their heart. Expressions of protest, simple declarations, moving graphics that encourage conversation and dialogue—there are many ways to enter into and encourage civic discourse. We believe activism can be fun, personal, beautiful and engaging; we can all play a part in making a better world for ourselves, for our communities, and for future generations.”

The Creative Life of Barry McGee

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The very first time I saw a Barry McGee drawing of a sad, anguished face on a wall in the streets of San Francisco in the early 90’s, it was the first time I began to look at “street art” as my art. At the time Barry (aka TWIST) and his wife at the time, the late great Margaret Kilgallen, were tearing up SF with murals, signs, stickers and tags, large scale pieces and beautifully detailed line work the likes of which had previously not been seen in the streets. The art, which could easily be seen walking or riding the bus, completely blew my mind and would help usher in a new format for a different type of artist to showcase their talents.

Fast forward to over ten years later, when in the summer of 2007 Aaron Rose gave me the opportunity of a lifetime: edit the film Beautiful Losers. The documentary, which featured Barry and Margaret and many other artists I appreciated and looked up to (Shepard Fairey, Steve Powers, Geoff McFetridge, Ed Templeton, and more), was an absolute dream job come true. I can proudly say we made a film that captured the spirit of creativity and inspiration I saw on those San Francisco streets that had a profound effect on me so many years ago.

Now the notoriously camera shy Barry is back in front of the lens as he describes his process and latest retrospective for the SF MOMA’s 75th anniversary show filmed by The Creative Lives crew.
