COVERAGE: Manifest Equality

Last week (March 3-7) Los Angelenos were treated to Manifest Equality, the massive group art show in support of equal rights awareness. Throughout the week the gallery was open to the public where the works of over 200 artists were on view, Aaron Rose taught a Make Something!! DIY workshop, musical performances by Ben Lee, Seawolf and Modest Mouse and more rocked the opening and closing night parties where stirring speeches were delivered by activists such as Cleve Jones and actors Marissa Tomei and Heather Graham among others.

TONIGHT (March 6): Manifest Equality Closing Night Party

MANIFESTEQUALITY, one of the biggest and most important contemporary art shows to come to Los Angeles in recent memory, holds it’s closing night party tonight in Hollywood. The massive show, which features works from over 200 artists in the name of equal rights, held it’s opening night’s party on Wednesday (coverage to come) and is worth checking out and supporting. That is, of course, if you enjoy art and supporting other human beings.

Lovers of art and equal rights have plenty to be excited about this week as the massive art show/equal rights event MANIFESTEQUALITY opens this Wednesday and continues through this weekend in Hollywood (*complete schedule of events listed below). Featuring a lineup of artists and friends who’ve donated their time and creativity to championing equal rights for all including Aaron Rose, Barry McGee, Cali Dewitt, Carlos Ramos, Chris Johanson, Clare Rojas, Friends With You, Gary Baseman, Jesse Spears, Keith Scharwath, Luke Cheuh, Ron English, Sage Vaughn, Shepard Fairey, Swoon, Tim Biskup and many, many more.

Also…a Busy-Being pop up shop with curated artist made goods will be on hand with a porton of the proceeds going to support for the cause.

FRIDAY (Feb. 26): J Dilla Tribute feat. Soundlessons and Hit+Run

Mike C and the Hit+Run homies whip out the live screenprinting while Soundlessons provide the beats for the 5th annual J Dilla tribute, Still Shining. Proceeds from the event go to the J Dilla Foundation which helps “fund inner-city music programs, and provide scholarships to students attending schools that have progressive music curricula.”

Also…Dilla, aka Jay Dee aka James Yancy, who’s beloved for his exceptionally creative beat making and production skills plays an important and poignant role in the Tribe Called Quest doc I’ve been editing with Mike Rapaport. Much more to come on Dilla soon…

The Art of the Lost Art of Inglorious Basterds

The art from tonight’s Upper Playground and Quentin Tarantino’s Lost Art of Inglorious Basterds art benefit for Haiti’s earthquake victims has been released and can be viewed in it’s entirety at Upper Playground’s website and in person at their downtown LA gallery. Details of the show’s extremely limited print run and show info can be found here.

*All proceeds donated to the American Red Cross to help victims of the Haiti Earthquake.

THURSDAY (Feb. 18): The Lost Art of Inglorious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino’s Nazi scalping masterpiece Inglorious Basterds gets the Upper Playground art treatment at their downtown Los Angeles gallery for the Lost Art of Inglorious Basterds benefit for Haiti’s earthquake victims. Limited edition prints inspired by the film will be on display and for sale and consist of original art by David Choe, Sam Flores, Estevan Oriol, Alex Pardee, Grotesk, Jeremy Fish, Patrick Martinez, Dora Drimalas, Munk One, N8 Van Dyke, Rene Alamanza, Morning Breath and Skinner Davis.

*All proceeds donated to the American Red Cross to help victims of the Haiti Earthquake.

“Each print will be numbered and signed by Quentin Tarantino. Only (6) of each amount will be made. The prints can be viewed at www.upperplayground.com beginning on Tuesday, February 16, 2010.”

“Art plays a pivotal role in creating cultural momentum, and this is your chance to get involved.  The Gallery invites you to join artists from across the nation who are using their voices and talents to amplify and motivate the grass roots movement to fight for full & unrestricted equal rights for all Americans.

Submission is simple and quick. Just click here to submit images of your original artwork. You can submit any kind of visual art: painting, illustration, sculpture, collage— 2D or 3D. will be accepting submissions from Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 through 11:59 a.m. PST on February 19, 2010.

SATURDAY (Feb. 13): For the Love of Haiti at Studio Morke

My good pal Moral is a passionate promoter of good causes as well as an equally passionate party thrower, so it should come as no surprise that the two should meet for the silent art auction benefit For the Love of Haiti at downtown’s Studio Morke. Items up for bidding include the art of Patrick Hoelck, Samuel Bayer and the Clayton Brothers among others, as well as massages, meals and wine tastings.

100% of the evenings proceeds go to the relief efforts of Doctors Without Borders.

Beautiful Losers graphic/poster designer and my good buddy Keith Scharwath is now also a good art director as he guest art directs the upcoming Neighborhoods issue of GOOD magazine. In his new do-gooder role he’s looking for a few good contributors and that’s where you good creative types come in. Get in while the gettings good!

“Are you an artist or a photographer? We’ve opened up the issue to the greater creative web community through Society6 for visual artists, and Pictory for photographers. What this means in a nutshell is if you are interested in having your art in (or on the cover) of the magazine, you can participate on these sites and your art may be chosen.
