WEDNESDAY (Aug 18): Moving Beyond Cars-LA’s Alternative Transportation Celebration

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

The gelato-crazed, design-fazed Gelatobaby lends a hand (or her feet?) to GOOD magazine’s car-free, alternative transportation celebration Moving Beyond Cars. Taking place at downtown’s Jewel Box where the exhibition LA Beyond Cars: A Global Perspective on Rail and Space is currently held, the event is aimed at helping Angelinos become less auto-dependent while taking steps toward using the city’s ever expanding public modes of transportation.

From the delicious Gelatobaby:

“I’m really excited about an event I’m helping to plan for GOOD, in partnership with railLA, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, the Coalition for Clean Air, and de LaB. railLA contacted us to throw a party as part of the downtown LA exhibition LA Beyond Cars: A Global Perspective on Rail and Space which envisions a future of high-speed rail in LA. So we thought it would be really cool to look towards that future and make this event completely car-free—and we’re hoping everyone is up to the challenge!

So! Borrow a bike! Try taking the bus for the first time! Race a friend on horseback from across town! Just get to the event in a way that shows LA is moving beyond cars. Besides the fun of everyone reporting how they got there, we’ll also have a few special activities. We’ll have James Rojas leading his interactive city planning workshops (which I’ve written about for GOOD before), and the folks from CicLAvia will be on-hand to tell us about their plan to create car-free streets one day this fall (10/10/10!). Plus! Prizes will be awarded to whoever arrives in the most unique, “beyond car” way.

All information here, and you can RSVP and share the information over at Facebook. Hope to see you there!”

Keith’s Poolga (Wall)Papers

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Our pal Keith Scharwath has been on a roll as of late: art directing GOOD’s Neighborhoods Issue; designing for Unique LA’s Spring Show; works at Monster Children in Australia and Manifest Equality in Los Angeles; and most recently guest editing for Coudal Partners for the month of May.

Now our favorite Silver Lake based Beautiful Losers graphic designer who looks exactly like Paul Rudd has teamed up with Poolga to create (free!) digital wallpapers for your favorite Apple and Palm Pre devices.

Get your radical Scharwath designs here!

From Scharwath’s Carwash:

“A few months ago I was invited by my friend JC to create a few wallpapers for Poolga, a site dedicated to providing quality original artwork for iPads and iPhones.

It became the perfect opportunity to point out the similarities between all the boards (planks, slates etc.) in my life. Head over to Poolga for the free download and never forget to be thankful for the board under your feet (or fingers).”

It’s a GOOD Day in Keith Scharwath’s Neighborhood

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Drove back late last night from an amazing San Francisco food-fueled (Molinari’s, Pizzeria Delfina) shoe and shirt-hunting (Upper Playground, Shoebiz) art-viewing and buying (Coverage on Le Merde at Super 7 coming soon!) weekend getaway with friends (old, new and bunny-centric) in my former SF neighborhoods only to come back completely drained late last night to my trusty Los Feliz hood. Yet still, the price of a good time in SF is always worth the trip up north.

And speaking of neighborhoods and goodness…this quarter’s issue of GOOD Magazine not only focuses on the creativeness, uniqueness and renewal of the hoods we live in, but it’s also guest art directed by my good chum and Beautiful Losers graphic designer Keith Scharwath. As chief creator at GOOD last month, Keith was able to work on one of his biggest and most ambitious projects to date along with recruiting over 70 of his favorite artists and designers including: Chris Johanson, Trevor Burks, Jesse Spears, Jeff Canham, Maxwell Hoyoke-Hirsch, Philippe Nicolas, Leif Parsons, Scott Barry and Micah Lidberg among others.

Below is a visual peek at the issue Keith so proudly helped create. Be sure to check out the actual GOOD neighborhoods issue on newsstands and online now!

Click images below or here for details and more from Keith on his Carwash blog.

GOOD Issue 019-The Neighborhoods Issue

About the four different covers (above) from Keith:

“For the art in the magazine, we selected many different visual creators to show us their unique perspective on what a neighborhood is. Valeriya Volkova (Brooklyn, NY), Lorin Brown (Los Angeles, CA), Miss Lotion (Copenhagen) and Public School (Austin, TX) all created covers for GOOD’s first multiple-cover issue. You can learn a bit more about the covers here. And they are all available as prints from Society6.

And a bit of the Scharwath golden touch thrown in for good measure (pun intended).

From Keith’s Carwash (obvs cover deadline has passed but content submissions ongoing through Feb 15!):

“Are you an artist or a photographer? We’ve opened up the issue to the greater creative web community through Society6 for visual artists, and Pictory for photographers. What this means in a nutshell is if you are interested in having your art in (or on the cover) of the magazine, you can participate on these sites and your art may be chosen.

THURSDAY: Celebrate 30 Years of Farmers’ Markets in LA

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

With their fresh locally grown produce, independent vendors and hours or operation that usually directly coincide with your workday, farmers’ markets have been a Los Angeles staple for 30 years now. This Thursday’s celebration of the LA institutions will be held at the first farmers’ market, the Gardena market which opened back on June 23, 1979. On hand will be Mayor Villaraigosa to start the day’s festivities, as well as our friends at GOOD (focusing on design solutions for local food) and Fresh Pressed (handing out free vegetable dyed produce bags from ECOBAGS and the crafty hands of Gelatobaby’s Alissa Walker), a salsa Contest, free birthday carrot cake and food samplings galore. A worthy celebration to be happy for, but sadly the farmers’ market schedule holds true as the party only lasts from 10am-2pm in Little Tokyo.

Click here for a confirmed list of the day’s participants and festivities.

TOMORROW: Brendan Fowler’s New Book and a GOOD First Look

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Los Angeles not only hosts game one of the Lakers championship run Thursday night, but also a couple of art related events for the non-sports inclined.

  • Musician (BARR), writer (RVCA’s ANP Quartely), photocopier, the multi-talented Brendan Fowler releases his appropriately titled book ISBN-10: 0-9820559-3-5 in which he chronicles his past year in “object-making” with a camera and a photocopier. Brendan will be on hand to sign copies of the limited edition book at downtown’s Ooga Booga store. Memorize the title and get 10% off the book that night!

Thank GOOD It’s Thursday

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Ever since GOOD Magazine opened up the doors to their GOOD Space on Melrose for their GOOD.IS/DECEMBER series this month, they’ve been good enough to offer free events open to the public as well as free wi-fi for anyone wanting to stop by. They’ve hosted D.I.Y. workshops, town hall meetings on sustainability, and even film screenings. This Thursday they continue to bring the goods as gelato baby Alissa Walker and Good’s Casey Kaplow host artist Geoff McFetridge and others as they engage in a discussion on how good design can affect our LA community. Make sure to RSVP!

From GOOD:

“Designers love to claim that good design can solve any problem. Join the brightest minds from the vast and varied Los Angeles design world as they sketch out better solutions to some of LA’s most pressing issues.”
