FRIDAY (Aug 27): David Choe Book Signing @ Giant Robot 2

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

The dirty hands of David Choe return to LA to sign copies of his comprehensive, 10 year in the making, self-titled art book as well as his signature whale-inspired Munko vinyl figures at Giant Robot’s Sawtelle gallery space GR2.

From the Giant Robots:

“Giant Robot is proud to host a reception and book signing with artist David Choe to celebrate the release of his 288-page, self-titled monograph published by Chronicle Books.

Raised on comic books, affected by street art, and inspired by crime, women, and music, Choe has developed a unique and restless style that is effortless yet meticulous and focused yet dirty. Since the artist contributed his first illustration to Giant Robot magazine in 1997, he has gone on to become an international fixture in the worlds of street art and indie comics, and has had hugely successful solo shows in high-end galleries in Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, and Los Angeles (not to mention all three Giant Robot locations).

In addition to signing his brand-new book, Choe will be autographing his newly released Munko figures, which are based on his whale paintings and made by Japan’s Good Smile Company.”

SATURDAY (June 5): Dehara Yukinori’s The Jizo @ Giant Robot 2

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Giant Robot welcomes Dehara Yukinori and his Jizo (that means Japanese stone angel not whatever else you thought it meant!) to their GR2 gallery on Sawtelle.

From the Robots:

“Dehara’s hand-painted clay depictions of debauched salarymen, brutalized gangsters, happy monsters, and other unique figures stand about 5-inches tall. Although the pieces are detailed and glossy, the subtle and intentional flaws of the Japanese artist’s self-described “crummy” style project more humanity than horror, and are oddly sympathetic. His sculpture, photography, and paintings have garnered a cult of collectors around the world, and are celebrated in books, figurines, and other merchandise, as well as by more daring art galleries around the world.”

SATURDAY (April 10): John Pham’s Living Space at GR2

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

With yet another incredible upcoming art show, Giant Robot brings you to where Sublife writer and artist John Pham has been living as of late (namely in space and with aliens) in the aptly titled show Living Space at the GR2 gallery on Sawtelle.

Click here or flyer below to check a preview of Living Space.

From the Giant Robots:

“The work in Living Space portrays a cartoon world with its own set of laws and internal pop-inspired logic. The flat, vibrant colors and abstract lines clash with caricatures of urban, Los Angeles streetscapes and the people who live there. Rules of perspective and representation are willfully ignored in the gouache paintings on panel; the familiar figures, faces and places are distilled into contorted, colorful versions of themselves. Everything becomes, in effect, a cartoon. At first glance, the fluorescent-skinned, fractured people and pop candy-colored buildings may seem alien and off-putting. Upon further inspection, and with some familiarity, they prove inviting, friendly and, most importantly, human. The pieces will be mostly gouache paintings on panel with a few sculptures.”
