Our close collaborator, inspiring curator and dear friend Aaron Rose relaunches his dream art and design school in New York City this July and August with the return of the Make Something!! workshops. Originally spawned from a joint venture between our film Beautiful Losers and the generous contributions of Nike Sportswear, this latest incarnation of the D.I.Y. workshops aimed at teens features world renowned artists (Os Gemeos, Todd James, Ari Marcopoulos and Jeff Canham amongst others) as well as creatives from Converse, Nike and Brand Jordan working with students to create in a variety of mediums in Lower Manhattan.
The workshops culminate with a celebration of the students’ artwork created during the classes with a parade at the world famous Rucker Park in conjunction with the World Basketball Festival Celebration Event in August.
Register and sign up for the month long workshop events here or here. Class schedule, teachers, details and more can be found at Makesomethingschool.com as well as from head teacher Aaron Rose below.
“Not sure if everyone knows, but for the last three years we’ve been doing D.I.Y. creativity workshops for teens under the banner of Make Something!! This summer we’re partnering with Nike, Jordan and Converse to open a five-week long “pop-up” school house in NYC filled with amazing classes taught by fantastic artists, designers, musicians and all around champs in their fields. I thought I’d put the word out as I’m pretty excited about it.
Just as a teaser we’re offering classes like this: Documentary photo with Ari Marcopoulos, puppet-making with Todd James, sign-painting with Jeff Canham, Costume design with Cassette Playa, a mural workshop with Os Gemeos…plus shoe and garment design with Nike/Converse/Jordan designers and many, many more!
Check out our website for info and dates as they develop.
Classes are filling up quick, but if anyone is New York-based and has kids who want to attend (ages 13-18), email us at <info@makesomethingschool.com> and we’ll try to fit them in.

From our family at the Cinefamily:
“In celebration of the DVD release of Beautiful Losers, Aaron Rose will be showcasing short films by key artists in his critically acclaimed documentary, as well as never-before-seen interviews with artists from the scene, sharing personal stories behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation.”
Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural movements of a generation. In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories…speaking to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.
Old friends and good peoples get together tonight at FAMILY bookstore on Fairfax as artist/director/musician/graphic designer/writer Mike Mills and artist/director/musician/curator/publisher AaronRose launch Mills’ retrospective book GRAPHICS/FILMS published by Alleged Press. More from the one and only A. Rose:
“Please join us this Thursday at FAMILY (7:30) for an intimate evening with Mike Mills in honor of the release of his new book GRAPHICS/FILMS. A short presentation of retrospective films, videos and graphics will be followed by an informal conversation about his work in all mediums.
As part of Cinefamily’s ongoing “Family Sundays” (where LA bookstore Family invites a special guest to curate an evening of entertainment at the Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax), artist/designer/filmmaker Mike Mills (Thumbsucker, Does Your Soul Have A Cold, music videos for The Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Air, etc.) will be presenting the 1970 film from the Czech New Wave, Lovefilm. Much like Mike’s messages in his own films as well as his fine art, Lovefilm deals with the awkwardness of interpersonal relationships in the guise of romance. Join Mr. Mills this Sunday as he shares his thoughts on this lesser-known masterpiece from 1970.
Lovefilm presented by Mike Mills

In continuing the films spirit of collaboration, creativity, and inspiraton, Beautiful Losers and Nike Sportswear teamed up this summer to give back to the community with the Make Something!! workshop initiative. Many of the artists from the film (Ed Templeton, Mike Mills, Thomas Campbell) their contemporaries (KAWS, Todd James (REAS), Jose Parla, among others), as well as the filmakers (Aaron Rose, Money Mark, Tobin Yelland, and me Lenny Mesina) taught classes to high school kids in Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami on the D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) aspects of art-making. The web series, which documents workshops in NY and LA, was just released to the public through Nikesportswear.com. As supervising film editor of the series, which was produced and directed by BlackLake Productions, I believe we really made a difference as the kids in the workshops were extremely inventive and clever with the work they created. Here’s a look at one of the webisodes:
THANK YOU! Thanks to all of you East and West coasters who’ve come out to support Beautiful Losers and helped spread the films message to your friends and family!
