A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang and Snoop Rocked the Bells

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Since I’ve been editing other projects the past couple of months I haven’t been able to do anything associated with Michael Rapaport’s doc on A Tribe Called Quest which we began editing last year. That all changed this past Saturday as I got to wild out with Tribe rocking the Rock the Bells show for their set primarily made up of joints off their legendary 1993 album Midnight Marauders.

Mike Rapaport briefly discusses our Tribe film with Sway, Ali, Phife and Julian

Following a rousing comeback performance by the seldom seen Lauryn Hill, the trio of Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad took the stage to tear up the capacity crowd of 45,000+ as they ripped through classics “Steve Biko”, “Sucka Nigga”, “Oh My God” and others before being joined on stage by fourth Quester Jarobi and honorary member Busta Rhymes with Spliff to perform “Electric Relaxation”, “Buggin’ Out”, “Scenario” and of course, “Award Tour” among many other hits.

Needless to say, after seeing Tribe put on such an amazing show, I’m more than pumped to get back to cutting our A Tribe Called Quest film as we continue to get the film ready for the upcoming festival rounds.

Also…taking the San Bernardino stage by storm was the full Wu-Tang Clan unit with Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s son Boy Jones filling in for his late pops as they rumbled through their classic Enter the 36 Chambers (which coincidentally came out the same exact day as Tribe’s Midnight Marauders).

The Wu were then followed by West Coast’s resident don big Snoop Dogg as he closed out the night’s hip hop festivities with Tha Dogg Pound crew performing their own classics off of 1994’s Doggystyle.
