FRIDAY (Feb. 12): THIS and These Friends

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

THIS, “a group of 5 artists pooling their resources under one roof to provide an outlet for themselves and other creative people” is really bringing it as they’ve reached out to their friends for their inaugural show this Friday. From Corey Arnold to Shepard Fairey to Geoff McFetridge to Estevan Oriol to Jesse Spears to Sage Vaughn, the list goes on and on and there’s just waaaaay too many people to list so I’ll let the event flyer speak for itself.

Check out their THIS blog to see what great works to expect.

THIS WEEKEND: The Treasures of the LA Ladies Choir, RVCA and Some Movie

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I’m sure most will be enjoying eggnog and holiday parties galore this weekend thus the lack of art openings and events to speak of. Thankfully we have singing ladies, cool clothing and big blue aliens to keep us busy.

Take My Treasures
Saturday, December 19th, 4-7pm
Space 15 Twenty
1520 N. Cahuenga Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90028
  • Homie PM Tenore’s RVCA clothing company doesn’t just make awesome clothes, they’re steadfast supporters of the arts (Artist Network Program), publishers of ANP Quarterly and now provider of fashion to Angelinos with the opening of their Fairfax based store. Grandly opening this Sunday, RVCA’s new location adds to their flagship Haight & Ashbury store in San Francisco. (thanks to the omnipresent Meghan Edwards for the reminder!)

  • Oh yeah, and there’s this small 3D film by little Jimmy Cameron coming out too…

THIS WEEKEND: Buy, Buy, Buy, and TWIST and Frost

Friday, November 27th, 2009

The day after Thanksgiving, a.k.a. Black Friday, is upon us which of course means the holiday shopping season has officially begun (in the United States). Let the commerce commence!

  • In a novel approach to bring the art to the people, artist/designer Parra drives around LA with his mobile pop-up truck where he’ll be peddling both his art and clothing from his Rockwell Clothing line including various Stones Throw collabos. Truck stops at UNDFTD in Silver Lake from 12-2pm, HVW8 Gallery on Melrose from 3-5pm, and Archrival in Little Tokyo from 6-8pm. Take a peak at what items you may find via Freshnessmag.com.

  • Possibly the best place to do your gift shopping on the east side of LA is at the uniquely school themed boutique, Reform School. They may not have the crazy sales that many other chain stores are having today but they certainly have an abundance of those not-so-common gifts that are the hardest to find.

Reform School
3902 Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90029
  • And last but certainly not least is this little show I failed to mention last week and I can’t forgive myself for missing this one. Barry McGee (TWIST) and Phil Frost, two masters of graffiti-to-gallery art opened their group show Mind the Gap at the Prism gallery in West Hollywood last Friday. Curated by RVCA founder and fight aficionado PM Tenore.

TOMORROW: Brendan Fowler’s New Book and a GOOD First Look

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Los Angeles not only hosts game one of the Lakers championship run Thursday night, but also a couple of art related events for the non-sports inclined.

  • Musician (BARR), writer (RVCA’s ANP Quartely), photocopier, the multi-talented Brendan Fowler releases his appropriately titled book ISBN-10: 0-9820559-3-5 in which he chronicles his past year in “object-making” with a camera and a photocopier. Brendan will be on hand to sign copies of the limited edition book at downtown’s Ooga Booga store. Memorize the title and get 10% off the book that night!
