Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Sister Corita Kent’s inspirational spirit continues to thrive through creative art making events curated by the Corita Art Center and in small part due to the short film we made about Corita, Become a Microscope: 90 Statements on Sister Corita (film excerpt below featuring Money Mark’s new school “ABC’s” song and Max Erdenberger’s awesome animation. You can also take an extended look at the Nowness.com).

This Thursday the bay area is invited to be a part of both as the Levi’s Workshop in San Francisco’s Mission district hosts the Corita Art Silkscreen Mash-Up as well as the Sister Corita Film Program featuring our film, directed by Aaron Rose and edited by yours truly, along with 60’s era films Sister Corita: Mary’s Day by Baylis Glascock and Survival With Style by Cal Bernstein, Alex Singer and Haskell Wexler.

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Get your Choe on in the bay as David Choe travels north to Giant Robot’s GRSF store to sign copies of his recently released, 10 year in the making, self-titled book as well as scribble doodles for the peoples.

From Giant Robot:

“Giant Robot is proud to host a reception and book signing with artist David Choe to celebrate the release of his 288-page, self-titled monograph published by Chronicle Books.  Raised on comic books, affected by street art, and inspired by crime, women, and music, Choe has developed a unique and restless style that is effortless yet meticulous and focused yet dirty. Since the artist contributed his first illustration to Giant Robot magazine in 1997, he has gone on to become an international fixture in the worlds of street art and indie comics, and has had hugely successful solo shows in high-end galleries in Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, and Los Angeles (not to mention all three Giant Robot locations).

In addition to signing his brand-new book, Choe will be autographing his newly released Munko figures, which are based on his whale paintings, made by Japan’s Good Smile Company, and distributed by Giant Robot.”

TWIST From Oakland to LA with Barry McGee

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

One of my all time faves amongst the graffiti greats who’ve gone gallery, Barry McGee (a.k.a. TWIST) is still producing at the top of his game as evidenced in his works on display at the Oakland Museum’s Gallery of California Art and at the Hammer Museum’s Outside the Box exhibition in Los Angeles.

Continually a force on the streets to this day, Barry’s style has evolved both organically and drastically over the years to incorporate mechanical beings, large scale installations and most notably his bold geometric patterns into his gallery work. Yet it all still somehow evokes the same sentiment his sometimes sad, anguished or perplexed characters personify.

The video below shows a master at work installing his California contribution in Oakland and is sweetly bookended with a tandem bike ride with Barry’s and the late great Margaret Kilgallen’s daughter Asha (who was last seen on film in our Beautiful Losers as a toddler).

Go see Barry’s art if you’re in the Bay (installation at the Oakland Museum)…

SATURDAY (June 12): Greg Gossel’s Sleepwalking @ White Walls SF

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Keeping it in the Bay, Greg Gossel’s clever multi-layered mixed-media pop-culture messages walk their way onto the walls of San Francisco’s White Walls gallery in his solo show Sleepwalking.

From White Walls:

“Sleepwalking critiques mass media’s exploitation of specific groups of people: a consumerist practice that projects biased perceptions of gender, race, and culture. This collection points out specific imagery from collective memory of the past 50 years including the confederate flag, 1960s race riots, comic book superheroes, pro wrestling, the Reagan war on drugs, and 8 bit video games. Sleepwalking through this myriad of cultural fragments, Gossel questions how our visual culture has affected society thus far and how it will play out in the future.”

Opening reception: Saturday, June 12th, 7-11pm
