In Spike Jonze’s critically acclaimed short filmI’m Here young robots with expressive eyes fall in love and sadly break hearts the way humans do: by taking everything they can until there’s nothing left to take. Space 15 Twenty in Hollywood hosts an outdoor screening of the melancholy tale with special live musical performances by our lovely and talented friends ASKA (who’s music helped inspire the short) and Sam Spiegel (DJ Squeak E. Clean of the world famous N.A.S.A. crew) that will surely lift your spirits. Come for the heartache, but be sure to stay for the rebound. Presented by McSweeney’s and Chocolate Industries.
“I’m Here is a short film by Spike Jonze about two robots living in semi-futuristic Los Angeles where humans and robots coexist. Based on Shel Silverstein’s children’s book, The Giving Tree, the plot revolves around Sheldon, the protagonist, lending his limbs to Francesca when she starts loosing hers. This is true love as it gets…
Throughout I’m Here you can hear L.A. based art musician ASKA, whose beautiful song, “There Are Many of Us,” is featured in the film. ASKA told us that the inspiration came from the ‘first song I wrote on a guitar in a bathtub. I felt I needed to tell myself that there are many of us and not just the ‘one’, to release myself from being tied up to the one.”

Our fine friends with the finest of tastes at Family Bookstore on Fairfax host another incredibly entertaining evening of intellect and good humor as Spike Jonze joins Dave Eggers for some conversating, book launching and signing and a bit of hand shaking. They’ll also be accompanied by the lovely sounds of our lovely friend ASKA as she performs an acoustic set to start the night’s festivities.
From the Fam:
“Family Bookstore is pleased to host the launch of two new books by Mcsweeney’s:
There Are Many of Us by Spike Jonze & It Is Right to Draw Their Fur by Dave Eggers
Eggers will conduct a live Q&A with Jonze, followed by audience questions. Both will be signing books afterward.
Co-composer of the soundtrack to Jonze’s film I’m Here, Aska, will perform an acoustic live set to begin the evening.
Filled with gorgeous photography, behind-the-scenes ephemera, and funny, inspiring interviews, There Are Many of Us celebrates the uniquely spontaneous making of Spike Jonze’s new movie I’m Here, a boy-meets-girl love story, set in LA, experienced by robots. The book includes an original CD soundtrack as well as a DVD of the thirty-minute movie I’m Here, with special bonus content.
It Is Right to Draw Their Fur is Dave Eggers’s first collection of drawings. Most of these works are of unusual mammals, most often accompanied by slogans with ancient, heroic, or just plain odd overtones. This full-color package will be a combination of 26 large-sized prints and an accompanying booklet.”

“The Creators Project event series—a roving global celebration—launches this summer on June 26, when The Creators rolls into 80,000-square-feet of display and performance space honeycombed throughout the legendary Milk Studios in New York’s Meatpacking District.
The event is going to be a groundbreaking combination of interactive art and installations, panels, workshops, screenings, and live performances. As much as The Creators Project is a digital archive of our digital world, it is also a testament to the enduring appeal of the Real. Many of the artists within the program explore the way that digitally manipulated images, sounds, and motions converge in real time, in real spaces.”
To commemorate this Sunday’s special day for Mothers everywhere, here’s LCD Soundsystem’s party panda infested music video for “Drunk Girls” directed by Spike Jonze. Happy Mother’s Day moms!

“I’m Here” is a robot love story celebrating a life enriched by creativity. The movie is set in contemporary L.A., where life moves at a seemingly regular pace with the exception of a certain amount of robot residents who love among the population. A male robot librarian lives a solitary and methodical life — devoid of creativity, joy and passion - until he meets an adventurous and free spirited female robot. The film stars British actor Andrew Garfield (Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Social Network) and Sienna Guillory, one of Maxims 100 sexiest women.”
Tell Them Anything You Want, the brilliant short documentary on Maurice Sendak filmed by Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs during the making of Jonze’s adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, will be playing theatrically one night only at New York’s IFC Center. This exclusive screening also concludes with a special Q&A session with directors Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs.
Back in December we got a taste of David Cross’ new comedy sandwich which featured Will Arnett, Spike Jonze and Cross as the titular character in the UK (Channel 4) comedy The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. And thanks to a little something called “the interwebs”, us Americanos get to laugh at Todd Margaret’s poor decision making as well. Here’s the pilot episode of The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret in three bite-sized portions suitable for snacking throughout the day.
And Speaking of Spike, here’s a clever and surprisingly fitting video mash of James Gandolfini’s iconic Tony Soprano voicing Carol from Jonze’s adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are.
